Neurotic Anxiety Leads To Repression And Reaction Formation Towards Ellie’s Character In The Whale (2022) Movie Script
This research aims to analyze the movie script of The Whale (2022), written by Samuel D. Hunter, with a focus on the psychological aspects experienced by the character Ellie. By utilizing a qualitative approach, descriptive and narrative methods, this research can be conducted and presented. Literature review, observation, and note-taking method are employed to gather relevant research data. The primary source for this research is taken from script of The Whale through intrinsic approach based on Petrie and Boggs' theory of characterization, plot, setting, and theme. This intrinsic analysis is then linked to an extrinsic approach based on Sigmund Freud's theories of anxiety and defense mechanisms. In addition, the research is also supported by secondary data, including books, scientific journals, and other relevant sources of information. The findings of this research revealed that neurotic anxiety stemming from Ellie’s past leads her to employ defense mechanisms, specifically repression and reaction formation. These mechanisms are reflected in her sarcastic, rebellious, and manipulative traits.
